About Rachel

9288b-2017-07-082b14-11-11I am a Labour Councillor for Whitley ward, Reading and a lead member on the council.  I am passionate about championing my community and serving Reading.

I was a Parliamentary Candidate in the 2017 general election, I was proud to lead a positive and active campaign that increased the Labour vote by 82%, recording the highest number of Labour votes ever in Wantage.  I am a long standing member of the GMB union and the Cooperative Party and was supported by them both during this campaign.

I am one of the Labour members of the Local Government Association’s national Community Wellbeing board.

I have held responsibility for Adult Social Care since May 2013 and as such serve on the Policy Committee and the Adult Social Care, Children’s Services and Education Committee (also known as ‘ACE’).  I previously was Reading’s Cabinet member Councillor for Housing and Neighbourhoods from May 2011 until May 2013.

I am vice-chair of the Older People’s working group and chair of the Access and Disabilities working group, and a member of Reading’s health and well-being board.

I have a particular interest in tackling poverty; support for the elderly and housing issues.  I also campaign and fund-raise for better support for rape and sexual abuse survivors.

I am a mum of two and now run a small ethically based business, offering training and virtual financial management support to start ups and charities.  I am proud to have been a finalist in the Thames Valley Business Venus Awards 2017 as Entreprenuer of the Year and of the work we do to help people improve their organisations and communities.

I am a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA).  I trained while working in Sophos, a Thames Valley based software company.  I am also an unpaid director of Reading Community Energy Society, a cooperative dedicated to increasing renewable energy production in the Reading area and the treasurer of the Oxford Road time bank.
