I'm really hoping thst we will get some good bids in from partners who share a vision of independence with community spirit for both Extra Care residents and those living in the local community who I want to benefit from the opportunities that it will offer.

READING Council plans for extra care housing on the site of the former Arthur Clark Care Home and Albert Road Day Care Centre have taken a major step forward with the start of the official tender process.
Reading Borough Council has published what is known as an OJEU notice. This formally gives potential partners 40 days to express their interest in building the proposed accommodation for 40 older people in Caversham. All bids received will be carefully considered by the Council before shortlisted bidders are invited to work up detailed designs for the scheme.
The final award of the contract is expected to be in late 2014. Subject to planning permission, it is expected that builders will be on site next year.
Extra care housing offers older people who want to live independent and active lives purpose-built individual homes but with increased support and care available as their needs change. Access to care and support will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, either on site or by call. Bidders will also be required to ensure that day activities are available on the site, benefiting older people living in the local area.
When complete, the facility is also expected to include a level of affordable housing.
Rachel Eden, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Member for Adult Social Care, said:
“The start of the official tendering process for this scheme is very exciting. As we get older we increasingly want to remain independent but be part of a community and know that help is at hand as and when we need it. The council is inviting providers to work with them to redevelop the Arthur Clark and Albert Road site as extra-care housing with day activities for the local community. This is an important step in ensuring that services are available to help people to fulfilled lives.”
Richard Davies, Lead Councillor for Housing at Reading Borough Council, said:
“I am very pleased that we are seeing real progress in delivering modern new housing for older people North of the River. Extra care housing delivers your own individual home but with additional care on your doorstep, as and when you need it.
It’s great that the proposal will include local day activities for Caversham residents.
These could include a whole range of activities such as a restaurant, fitness suite and communal areas to host group activities.”
