ADULTS and children who care for a friend, relative or neighbour can find support and information at a free Carers Week event.
The Council is hosting the ‘Building a Carer Friendly Community in Reading’ event on Wednesday 10th June, 1.00 – 3.30pm, in the Council Chamber of the Civic Offices. Carers are being invited to share their experiences and explore ways in which to build a carer-friendly community in Reading.
According to the 2011 Census, 12,200 adults and children in the Borough have a caring role. Over 500 children are known to the Reading Young Carers project, many of whom access young carers clubs and support on a weekly basis.
Presentations from older people support specialists Time Finders and the Department for Work and Pensions will talk about the help available to support carers covering finances, emotional and practical support. Voluntary and Community organisations will also be on hand to provide information and advice.
Under the 2014 Carers Act, all carers are entitled to a carer’s assessment regardless of their needs for support or their financial resources, or those for the person they care for. Their needs will be assessed for a support package tailored to their circumstances and could include Direct Payment assistance, specialist equipment and home adaptations, health advice or emergency back-up planning.

Lead Councillor for Adult Social Care, Rachel Eden said:
“Reading’s carers do so much to help their family friends or neighbours. Many carers don't even think of themselves as carers, but it's important that they get the support they need to ensure that the person they support and they themselves can live fulfilling lives. I'd encourage people to come along to this event and to find out more about the support available.”
Lead Councillor for Children’s Services, Jan Gavin said:
“Many children and adults devote a large part of their lives to caring for their relatives or friends who need support, and they can often feel isolated. This event is an opportunity to share experiences and find out what help is available.”
