A dedicated team of 20 volunteers descended upon Reading on Saturday night (25th April) for their annual fancy dress fundraiser in aid of male and female survivors of sexual abuse and assault. Held on the last Saturday of April each year to coincide with Sexual Assault Awareness Month it is going from strength to strength. The original night was to raise awareness that there were no services in Reading to support survivors of sexual abuse. Now with the newly opened centre Trust House they were able both celebrate the success and raised £658 for the support of children who have experienced sexual abuse including child sexual exploitation. Being aware of the increasing demand for these services the team pulled out all the stops to be noticed dressed in costumes including Red Indian, Boxer, Batman, My Fair Lady, Amelia Earhart, Anne Boleyn and a pirate with the help of Fun 'n' Frolics 10% discount.
The generous reaction from those out and about in Reading was heartwarming as was the positive welcome from venues including Marilyn's Loft Bar, The Face Bar, The Tilehurst Club,The Hook and Tackle, O'Neill's, The Lime Bar, The Horn, The Hop Leaf, The Bugle, Iguana Bar, Global Cafe, Great Expectations, All Bar One, Darklands @South St, The Wishing Well, The Albion, The White Eagle and Pavlov’s Dog
Through Trust House Reading children in Berkshire are able to receive free specialist play therapy or young people's counselling. The centre also offers counselling, advice and ISVA support to men, women and those friends and family who also need support. Whether the abuse happened a day ago or twenty years ago, the centre will offer confidential support.
Cllr Rachel Eden who took part said “It was wonderful how generous and friendly people were – and while it is a sensitive subject people took that in their stride. The reaction was wonderful to this more lighthearted way to support the hugely important work that Trust House is now doing in Reading”
