One Week Left To Register To Vote

13/04/2015
Reading Borough Council Press Release

RESIDENTS who want to vote in the up and coming General and Local Elections have just one week left to register to vote.

Monday April 20th is deadline day for people wanting to register. Any application made after that date will not be accepted.

The quickest and easiest way to register to vote is online at http://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Local residents can obtain a paper copy of the registration form by contacting Reading’s electoral registration office direct on 0118 937 3717.

A new system of Individual Electoral Registration (IER) has been introduced by Government. It means each and every individual is now responsible for registering themselves to vote. Previously, one person in every household was responsible for registering everyone else who lives at that address.

In February, the Council wrote to all Reading properties with details of who is currently on the electoral register for that property. Anyone living at the property, but whose name is not on the letter, should register to vote at http://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

People who want to vote in the 2015 elections by post need to be registered under IER. The Electoral Services Team have to receive completed and signed postal vote application forms by 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2015 at the latest.

Anyone who is unsure whether they are registered, should contact the Council’s electoral registration team by email on elections@reading.gov.uk.

Under the new IER rules, every local authority in the country now needs to go through a process of matching the names of all unconfirmed electors, with individual data held by Central Government. Where matches cannot be made because the Government does not hold the relevant data, the individual will be asked for further information and/or documentary evidence, or risk losing their vote.
