Excellent GCSE Results for Reading Students
22/08/2013
Reading Borough Council Press Release
Early indicators, as supplied by the schools, show that overall local authority results have improved this year despite the range of national changes that have been introduced.
90% of all Year 11 students achieved five or more A* to C grade GCSE passes this year, compared to 84% in 2012.
2013 GCSE results also show more three in five pupils in Reading achieved the higher standard of five or more A* to C grade passes including English and mathematics. The 64% achievement rate in this area for 2013 was an improvement on last year's figure of 61% and represents an 8% increase over the past 2 years.
Five of Reading's secondary schools are Academies and are run independently of the local authority. Two Secondary Schools, Reading Girls and Blessed Hugh Faringdon, remain as local authority maintained schools.
Blessed Hugh Faringdon reported outstanding results this year where for the first time 100% of their pupils achieved 5 or more passes at grade A*-C. When including English and mathematics, they achieved 72% which represents more than twice as many students achieving this high standard compared with 2010.
85% of the girls from Reading Girls School this year achieved five or more A*-C passes which is an increase from 2012 where 83% achieved this level. When including English and mathematics, they achieved 53% up 6% from last year.
The young people who have achieved these results are the first group who are required to continue their education until the age of seventeen, under the Government’s scheme to raise the age of participation. These strong results will make it easier for many to secure either:
full-time study in a school, college or with a training provider;
full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training;
an apprenticeship.
John Ennis, Reading Lead Councillor for Education and Children's Services, said: 'I would like to congratulate all the pupils for this fantastic achievement which will provide them with an excellent stepping stone for their future in further education or the work force. It is good to see that all of their hard work has been rewarded. I would also like to congratulate headteachers, their teachers and staff here at the Council for their efforts in helping young people to achieve these great results.'
