Today I am having a special day with my children and also thankful for my own mum, who because of her work today and my parliamentary selection yesterday I’m not able to see this weekend.
But I am also sparing a thought of all those for whom Mothering Sunday doesn’t bring pure joy. I know too many friends whose Mum has died, have a difficult relationship with their own mum or else don’t have children but wish they did, to be ignorant of the way a day like today can make some people feel. But we should also celebrate that special role and be thankful for the mothers in our lives – whether we give them the name of “mum” or not
On Mothering Sunday honour and respect all those who take the role of a mother whether you are given that name or not: for your strength, unconditional love and patience.
“Here’s to strong women may we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”
