I was with Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Reading West, Victoria Groulef, today and we’ve been encouraging local young people to take part in Britain’s first National Voter Registration Day. Voter registration is a passion of mine – if you aren’t registered to vote your voice can’t be heard in the democratic process. Victoria has published a press release explaining:
“National Voter Registration Day is all about encouraging people, especially those aged 16-24, to register to vote. Not many young people are aware that they can register to vote from the age of 16, meaning that as soon as they turn 18 they will be activated on the Electoral Register so they can vote.”
“There are countless issues decided by politicians which affect young people, like student fees, apprenticeship wages and changes to the education system, so it’s really important that they have their say on who makes these decisions.”
Victoria continued “The day has been organised by the group Bite the Ballot who aim nationally to add more than 250,000 people to the register in just one day.”
Victoria added “I’ve been out and about meeting young people at community centres, parent and toddler groups and on the doorstep to encourage young people in Reading to register and to do the 5 friends challenge – to get 5 of their friends to register to vote too.”
