The event aimed to reach out to people who might not access all the support they are entitled to and also to recognise the vital role unpaid carers play in the wellbeing of the community.
In Reading, an estimated 12,000 people provide unpaid care for someone who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support.
The ‘health’ themed event is hosted by Reading Council in partnership with local voluntary care sector providers, carers and charities, including Berkshire Carers Service. It runs from 9.30 am to 3pm at Greyfriars Church, Friar Street, in the main hall, on Friday 20th November.
Advice and information as well as a series of talks including understanding carer entitlements under the new Care Act, accessing health support from GPs, and stress relief and relaxation techniques.
Many of us will be a carer at some point in our lives. Carers play an essential role in our community and they deserve the best advice and support in their role as well as help in maintaining their own independent lives.
Some people may not see themselves as carers or know – under new legislation that came into effect in April this year – that they have specific rights and that they are entitled to additional social care support. I was glad to see a good number of carers at the event to find out more about support they and their loved one can get to make the most of life and I am sure that they will also be spreading the word to others.
Susan Hipgrave, a carer from Reading who looks after her disabled daughter, encouraged other carers to come to the event. She said:
“As a carer, your life, and the life of those you care for, can be considerably improved by making sure you have the most up to date information and support. The Carers Rights Day event is a great opportunity to get help and advice.”
