Disability Benefit Changes Explained at Civic Centre Event

The government is hitting disabled people very hard and there's also a lot of confusion around, as there are so many changes coming at once.
As a local councillor there's not much that can be done to change the over all impact of some of these changes, although there are some things that can be done, but councils can support people with dealing with what the changes mean.
I'm really pleased that the Physical Disabilities and Sensory Needs Network and Reading Council have worked together to put on an event this week to help people get access to the information they need.
I'd encourage local people who might be affected by the welfare changes to come along to the civic centre this Wednesday afternoon.

Reading Borough Council Press Release

AN INFORMATION event on welfare reforms and disability is taking place at the Civic Centre on Wednesday November 20th, 2pm – 4.30pm.

Hosted by the Physical Disabilities and Sensory Needs (PDSN) Network, the event will cover the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), welfare reform changes and the appeals process for the Employment Support, Disability and Attendance Allowances.

Information and advice will be available from Reading Borough Council, the Department of Work and Pensions, Reading CAB, Deaf Positives, New Directions career advisors and Berkshire Phab, among others.

Rachel Eden, Reading Lead Councillor for Adult Social Care, said:

“The government is making huge changes to the welfare system and this is particularly affecting people with disabilities. It’s vital that Reading’s residents with disabilities understand what this means for them and that they get the best possible advice and support. This day will be a good chance for people to get information and advice and it’s great that the Network has organised it.”

Simone Illger, Chair of the PDSN Network added:

“We would urge you to come along to this informative event. As always, our agenda contains something of interest for everyone and we would also like to hear any news you feel Network members may find important or useful.”

BSL interpreters will be present to sign for the whole event. No booking required. For more information call 0118 937 2383 or email pdsn@reading.gov.uk.
