READING Borough Council is hosting a Care and Support Conference for service providers, voluntary sector partners and service users on 13th January. The programme includes an update on how by working together we can make the best of the Care Act and other plans for the care and support for adults in the Borough.
Following on from a successful event in September – which was attended by over 80 organisations – this conference takes place on Tuesday 13th January, 9.30am-2.30pm at the Rivers Ibis Health Club, Scours Lane.
All organisations that currently provide care and support to adults in Reading, or are interested in providing services in the future, are welcome. This includes preventative services, home care, supported living, extra care housing, residential and nursing care for older people, people with learning disabilities and physical disabilities, people with mental health needs and people with drug and alcohol issues.
Members of the Council’s Adult Social Care User Panel will also be attending to ensure that people who use these services in Reading are at the heart of decision making. Healthwatch Reading will also attend and discuss with providers how to better engage with the users of services.
The conference will revisit the Care Act and what changes in the national care system will mean for Reading residents and those who support them. Providers will be encouraged to share views through the Council’s consultation on implementing the Care Act – available at www.reading.gov.uk/careact. It will also be a chance to comment on the draft Market Position Statement – the Council's position on the commissioning of support for children, families and adults.
The free conference also provides an excellent networking opportunity and will include small group discussions about a range of topics, including improving quality, gathering and using feedback from service users, and adult safeguarding.

“Reading Borough Council is committed to ensuring that despite the very difficult challenges we face – including the cuts to the council’s budget imposed by government – locally we all work together to ensure that people receive the best possible care and support when they need it.
“I’d urge all those with an interest in adult services to attend and if you can’t to take part in the Care Act consultation. While the council is constrained within those constraints we can all work together to ensure that Reading’s residents live fulfilling lives whatever their needs.”
