Investment in Day Services for Older People

Reading Borough Council Press Release

READING Borough Council is asking residents for their views on activities and centre based day services for older people.

Over the past year, popular well-attended older people’s clubs have been launched in Caversham, Southcote and Whitley. To meet the needs of older people who require a higher level of support, the Council also provides a day centre service at The Maples Resource Centre.

A consultation will ask older people, their families and carers for their views on how this centre might be enhanced, either at the existing location or if it were to relocate to a more modern site. Potential use by the wider community is also under discussion.

Lead Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Rachel Eden said:

“The new older people’s clubs throughout the Borough run by the council in partnership with the community have been an even bigger success than I hoped. The reason is that the community has shaped the activities and support on offer.

“I know from talking to service users and carers how much the centre based service at The Maples is valued by those people who need support. The council is committed to continue to support older people to live independent, fulfilling lives, and as part of this the centre based service is vital.

“This consultation is about how Reading can have a modern, sustainable day service and I’d encourage anyone with an interest in this to share their views on how they would like to see this service evolve and improve so that they are supported in living life to the full.”

The consultation runs from 20th March until 22nd June. Older people, their families and carers, and community groups can contribute their views online, in writing or in person at a series of meetings and events.
