New Social Club for Older People in Caversham

In the Autumn the former manager of the Albert Road Day Centre was appointed to lead the drive for better activities for older people across our borough, particularly focussing to start with in Caversham and Southcote.
One of the requests has been for hyper-local services that are flexible and informal but still organised and regular.  The new social club launching in the Amersham Road part of Caversham is just one of these services, and it is being organised cooperatively between the council and older people themselves.

I'm looking forward to attending the launch – services that meet people's aspiration, are flexible and are the council working together with it's community.

A NEW social club for older people in Caversham is being launched on Friday 31st January, 10.00 am – 3.00pm at the Amersham Road Community Centre.

The Club is being funded and supported by Reading Borough Council but led by volunteers from the Caversham Older People’s Steering Group with support from Age UK Berkshire Active Living – and offers fun, accessible activities for local over 50’s.

The free launch event includes table top games, bingo and seated yoga for all abilities. Refreshments on offer will include tea, coffee, cake and a free fish and chips lunch.

Councillor Rachel Eden, Lead Member for Adult Social Care said:

“This social club is exactly the sort of local service that older people in Caversham have told us they want to see more of, and the council will continue to work better with the Caversham community to provide a fun, friendly meeting space.

“I’m looking forward to meeting everyone at the launch event and would encourage people to come along, meet up with other older residents and let us know what other services they would like to see for their community.”
