#rdg “most romantic place in UK” as 35 Year Engagement Ends with Valentine’s Day Wedding

I was reading today that Reading was the most romantic place in the UK (according to a commercial company's probably slightly spurious research!), but this can only be confirmed by the press release below.

A bit of light relief for everyone given current circumstances.

35 Year Engagement Ends with Valentine’s Day Wedding

29/01/2014
Reading Borough Council Press Release

A SOUTHCOTE couple are finally tying the knot on Valentine’s Day – 35 years after first getting engaged.

Stephen Heath, 58, and Kim Heath, 54, – Stephen took Kim’s surname in 1981 – are one of eight lucky couples who will be taking marriage vows at Reading Register Office on February 14.

Stephen and Kim got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 1979, but have only recently set the date. Stephen jokes that it has taken this long as Kim “wanted to be sure”.

Stephen adds:

“After many years of asking to agree a wedding date, I was over the moon when she finally said ‘Yes’. We rushed down to the Reading Register Office to give our intention of marriage before she could change her mind!”

The couple initially planned to keep their romantic wedding date a secret so that they could surprise family and friends, but shared their good news on New Year’s Day. The couple’s family, including their 3 grandchildren, are looking forward to the big day. Kim’s father is in charge of organising the reception.

Staff at Yeomanry House in Castle Hill are delighted that Stephen and Kim have chosen Reading’s Registration Service as their marriage venue.

Lead Councillor for Culture, Sport and Consumer Services, Councillor Paul Gittings, said:

“As a newlywed myself, albeit one with a shorter engagement!, I know how exciting and joyous a wedding can be, and I wish Stephen and Kim all the best on their special day.”

Notes for Editors:
