READING'S pre-school pupils have outperformed their English counterparts by 5% in newly published figures from the Department for Education. Reading is ranked in the top 20% in England for a good level of development in Foundation Stage.
The data forms part of the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP). This is a teacher assessment of children’s development at the end of the academic year in which the child turns five.
Figures show that 64% of Foundation Stage children in the Borough are achieving a good level of development – 30th in the rankings of 152 English Local Authorities and a 13% increase on the previous year.
Additionally, the Borough ranks 13th for achievements in the 30% most deprived English areas, and 1st against our statistical neighbours. This is a considerable jump from Reading’s position of 48th in 2013.
The achievement gap between the highest and lowest performing children has also improved – in 2013 the gap was 33.3%, decreasing to 31.5% in 2014.
Reading’s Foundation Stage pupils showed particularly strong results in personal, social and emotional development and expressive arts, designing and making, with the percentage of children working securely in these areas of learning coming in at 83% and 85% respectively.
Lead Councillor for Education, John Ennis, said:
“In just one year, Reading’s EYFSP performance has improved by 13%, compared to the national improvement of 8%.
“While this data is encouraging, we are aware that further work is needed for Key Stages 1 and 2.
“The Council is working in partnership with Local Authority schools to build further on this success and maintain our solid performance at this stage of education in addition to improving performance across all key stages.”
