When the Arthur Clark home and Albert Road day centre were closed many residents were very clear they wanted the site to continue to be used to benefit older people in the Caversham area.
There was also a lot of scepticism about whether Reading council would deliver on that.
Caversham Labour and Reading Labour were determined to make that happen and next Wednesday residents can view detailed proposals before a planning application is submitted.
I want to see this site make a real contribution towards older people in Caversham living fulfilling lives. I hope many residents go along or phone the free phone number to ensure everyone's views contribute to getting the best scheme possible.
I know people can be skeptical about politics which is why it's so important to under promise and over deliver. I want this site to be an example of that.

RESIDENTS are being invited to view plans for a new extra care housing scheme for older people on the site of the former Arthur Clark Residential Home and Albert Road Day Centre.
The development is set to provide approximately 40 one and two bed units in addition to communal facilities, with 16 units for social rent.
In November 2014, after a competitive tender process, Reading Borough Council contracted A2 Dominion Housing Group Ltd to develop an extra care housing scheme.
A2 Dominion is inviting local residents to view and share their opinions on the proposed plans at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Albert Road, Caversham Heights RG4 7AW on Wednesday 1st April from 3.30pm – 7.00pm. Those unable to attend can call 0800 432 0077 with any queries or comments.
Lead Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Rachel Eden said:
“Local residents have been saying they want to see this site used for services for older people so that they can continue to live fulfilling lives in their own community.
“I’d encourage people to give their views on the proposals to help ensure that the services provided are the best they can be.”
Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Richard Davies said
“The Council is working with A2 Dominion to ensure that this site continues to benefit older people in Caversham. Our priority it to deliver a sustainable, high quality housing development that includes activities for older people in the wider community.”
The Council will contract additional specialist providers to deliver care services, catering and community activities at the new facility.
Subject to gaining planning permission, it is expected that builders will be on site later on this year to start work on the scheme.
