Thank you Reading Carers

It is national carers week this week and as pressures on carers grow it's important to use it.

Firstly in Reading we are thanking carers – for example the council is running a social event this Saturday. The role played by those who care for friends and relatives is often invisible and unfortunately the current emphasis on 'scroungers' and benefit frauds can hide the heroic efforts that people who look after a loved one make. Thanking carers is a way of letting them know that they are valued.

However it's not enough to just thank people and leave them too it. At the same time we should all urge anyone we know who is playing a caring role to get the support they need. Today there's an information session at the civic centre but I'd also encourage anyone who is providing support – even if you don't think of yourself as a carer – to take a look at the information available take advantage of an assessment about your support needs. You might be surprised – the council can offer respite, grants and practical support to enable you to help your loved one and to help you live a more fulfilling live too.

PEOPLE in Reading who care or have cared for a friend, relative or neighbour can enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation at a free Carers Week event at the Maples Resource Centre.

The ‘Let us Say Thank You’ event from 11am – 3pm on Saturday 13th June includes a free lunch and attendees can play skittles, join in at the men’s social club, try tai chi or enjoy Indian head massage and other pampering and activity sessions.

Lead Councillor for Adult Social Care, Rachel Eden said:

“The Maples event is a wonderful way to say thank you to Reading’s carers and the invaluable work that they do supporting family and friends.

“I hope that people will come along, meet up with other carers and enjoy some time for themselves.”
