Reading, like much of the country, is facing a housing crisis and despite the rhetoric today we know that this is a crisis if left to the Conservative government is not going to go away. As a Labour councillor I know the council has a big part to play but the situation is so serious that no one group or organisations can tackle this on our own. The council has organised an event on November 17th to create an action plan that landlords, housing associations, local voluntary sector and anyone interested in tackling the housing crisis in Reading can attend.
More information is here – I’d urge people to sign up:
THE HOUSING CRISIS – READING’S RESPONSE
A Call to Action
NOVEMBER 17TH 5.30 – 8.00PM, TOWN HALL, READING
We would like to invite you to join us at Reading Borough Council’s Annual Community Event in the Town Hall on Tuesday 17thNovember 2015 from 5.30pm to 8pm.
Providing homes for those in most need is a priority for the Council. Reading’s strong economy and vibrant town centre makes it an attractive place to live but we face an ever increasing challenge because of the shortage of affordable homes in the town. We have seen a sharp rise in homelessness over the last few years, and the shortage of affordable permanent accommodation has seen an increase in the numbers of families having to live in temporary accommodation or B&B, sometimes outside Reading.
With a keynote address on the national picture, by Rob Beiley, a partner and specialist in Housing at Trowers and Hamlins, a national Law firm, followed by a local perspective from Sovereign Housing Association, this event will address how we can work together to increase the supply of affordable housing, prevent homelessness and raise standards in the private rented housing sector.
Everyone is welcome to this event. Please pass this invitation on to others who may be interested.
Please let us know by Friday 4th November 2015if you would like to attend. To help us with organisation we will ask you select your workshop preference when you register.
